Enduring City

For here we do not have an enduring city, but we are looking for the city that is to come. ~ Hebrews 13:14

Most people who claim to be followers of Jesus know that whatever city you live in, the state you live in, the country you live in and even earth itself is not our permanent home, but boy do we hold tightly to the things of this world.  When was the last time you thought about your eternal home over your earthly home?  We are to be transient people here on earth as this planet was never meant to be our permanent home, or where we will find lasting treasures.  We can have an impact on the cities we live in by showing God’s love, grace and mercy to others, but we need to guard ourselves into thinking like the world thinks about materialism and getting comfortable here.  The city of our future and eternity is with God and His angels in the heavenly realms.  Revelation 21:2 says, “I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.”  Boldly live differently here on earth; be comfortable in being persecuted for your beliefs; your rewards will be great in your eternal home.  Live differently and serve others.  I need to be reminded on a daily basis that his home is a temporary landing spot; it’s not my forever home.  I live in an older home and would love to do some remodeling, but one day the question “why?” crossed my mind.  After all, this home will probably outlast my time on earth, so why should I get sucked into spending time, money and resources remodeling my physical home if I don’t really need to? Please know this was a personal revelation; remodeling your home is not a bad thing to do in of itself, but my personal thinking had become a little skewed.  I was in the head space of comparing myself to others and that is a lie from the enemy…..so the light bulb moment was a good one for me.  This is all temporary and will not matter in the end.  I should be more about spending my time, money and resources furthering God’s kingdom instead of trying to keep up with my neighbors.  After all, I should be sharing the gospel with my neighbors instead of being in competition with them.  That’s what we, as followers of Christ, need to be in the business of – showing compassion and making a difference so that many will know eternity in heaven. ~ Amen
